The Following is a FAQ that will provide details into the most frequently asked questions about this program. If you have further inquiries beyond what is answered here please contact Cameron McKay. His contact information is at the very bottom of this page.
Q: What is the Fine Option Program?
A: The Fine Option Program allows people to pay their fines through community service. The purpose of this program is to save the Judicial system money by preventing the unecessary detainment of people who cannot pay their fines.
Q: What is the Community Service Program?
A: The Community Service Program allows convicted members of the community to give back to their community by performing community service.
Q: What type of fine can I work off under the Fine Option Program?
A: All fines may be worked off EXCEPT for the following;
- Fines under the Manitoba Highway Traffic Act (e.g. Speeding) - Parking Tickets (e.g. wrongfully parking in a handicap parking space) - Surcharges (explained in more detail below) - Penalties under Section 57 of the Manitoba Family Maintenance Act (fines under Section 50 are eligible) - You CANNOT work off someone elses fine
Q: What is a Surchage?
A: A surchage is a fine that cannot be worked off through the Fine Option Program. Most violations have a surcharge incorporated into the total fine.
e.g. This is a hypothetical example. Roger has a fine for Driving Under The Influence (D.U.I.) which totals $1,500. There is a surcharge of $250.00 on that $1,500 fine. Therefor, Roger can only work off 1,250.00 of his original fine through the Fine Option Program. He must pay the $250.00 surcharge.
